Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (handling) 2nd Class (ret.) Luis Cervantes served for eight years in the Navy, which gave him the opportunity to live abroad in Japan for several years. During the course of his time in service, it became apparent that his kidneys were failing. By 2018, he received a kidney transplant and it changed the trajectory of his life and career. He attributes adaptive sports with helping him regained a sense of self and a sense of community. He had the opportunity to compete on behalf of Team Navy in the 2022 and 2023 Warrior Games.

What does the Invictus Games mean to you?

Participating in these games makes me feel like I’m in a place where I belong. Being around others makes me a better person and have a sense of competition.
