SSG Abel Baez has served in the Florida National Guard for 18 years. After having knee surgery to fix an injured ACL and meniscus tear, Baez was sent to the Soldier Recovery Unit at Fort Stewart to recover. There, he began adaptive sports and became involved in every sport offered for individuals with injuries similar to his. In 2023, he participated in the adaptive sporting event, Army Trials where he was selected to represent Team Army at the 2023 Warrior Games. He says that adaptive sports helped him prove his worth, not only to himself but to others in his situation who may not know how far recovery from these injuries can take them. SSG Baez is also the proud father of a 12 yr old daughter.

What does the Invictus Games mean to you?

Like my fellow athletes I am honored to be a part of Team U.S. I am privileged to compete with my fellow service members and other nations from around the world. Aside from the competitive aspect of the games, I look forward to the camaraderie and fellowship with the other athletes.
