Wade Spann
Alpine Ski | Biathlon | Indoor Rowing | Skeleton | SwimmingI am from Burke, VA, having enlisted directly out of high school. I served in Weapons Co 1st Battalion 5th Marine Regiment from August 2001-2005, and deployed three times with my unit, 2003- invasion of Iraq, Spring 2004- Fallujah, Spring 2005- Al-Ramadi. In 2004, while my unit was conducting search operations outside Fallujah, the unarmored Humvee I was in was struck by an improvised explosive device. I took shrapnel to the back of the head. I later returned for my third deployment in Ramadi, where my unit suffered numerous casualties. Post service I have mentored veterans in Fairfax County Court Veterans Docket, as a way for veterans to avoid jail time for offenses. In November 2018 I was hospitalized and diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Since then I have made it a priority to move my body before the disease takes away my freedom of movement. I am passionate about pushing myself physically in order to stave off the effects of this incurable disease.
What does the Invictus Games mean to you?
Participating as an athlete is a unique and profound experience that builds my self confidence and allows me to stay connected to the Marine Corps. It helps me stay focused on what I still can do and accomplish despite the setbacks of life we all have gone through.
