Richard “Trainwreck” Burkett is a true survivor, embodying the spirit of resilience. Despite losing both legs and battling lung issues, he firmly believes that his best days are still ahead. For him, participating in Warrior Athlete Conditioning Events is an opportunity to represent the United States and the Marine Corps, inspiring others to overcome life’s challenges, no matter what they are. Though Richard has not previously competed in the Warrior Games as an athlete, he has served as a coach for the Marine Corps in several events. In 2014, he competed in the inaugural Invictus Games, where he won Gold in Compound Archery. A dedicated husband and father of six, Richard is also a seven-year veteran of the USA Archery Team and a National Level Archery Coach. He enjoys competing, coaching, hunting, and spending time outdoors. Always eager to support the Games, he is open to interviews and sharing his journey on social media.

What does the Invictus Games mean to you?

Not only is Invictus an opportunity for me continue my recovery through sports and competition, but it is a way to foster camaraderie with our allied brothers and sisters. For me it is a place where I can inspire and be inspired by the triumph of overcoming disability by doing what was not thought possible and where the flame of Hope can be stoked into a white hot light with which we can see our way through the darkest of nights.
