Joshua Shannon
Alpine Snowboard | Indoor Rowing | SVB | SwimmingJoshua Shannon, a Marine with nearly 19 years of service, faced a significant change in early 2023 when he was diagnosed with multiple autoimmune issues. Initially resistant to transferring to the Wounded Warrior Battalion (WWBn) and leaving his role as an Aircraft Rescue Firefighter, Joshua eventually embraced the transition. This new chapter allowed him to better understand his conditions and find purpose in his role as a Recovery Support Marine (RSM). Competing in Warrior Athlete Conditioning Events has been pivotal in his recovery, helping him manage the pain associated with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) while keeping him active and giving him a renewed sense of purpose. Joshua enjoys mentoring fellow Marines within the battalion and thrives in the positive atmosphere of the Games. Outside of his recovery and service, Joshua is passionate about outdoor activities like hunting, fishing, hiking, and weightlifting. This is his first year participating in the Invictus Games.
What does the Invictus Games mean to you?
Invictus is an opportunity to continue to grow in my recovery process. More importantly, an opportunity to help others grow in their recovery. Understanding that some of the issues we face are fought from within as well as having physical limitations. Showing growth in recovery has proven key in my process even though I am unable to recover from my condition, being a part of the Invictus team helps me learn my limitations and how to work through them.
